BATTLE OF THE BOOKS at P.S. 145

Welcome! My name is Ashley Williams and I'm a junior at Columbia University. I began Battle of the Books at P.S. 145 in September 2009, while a sophomore.

Battle of the Books Final Award Ceremony - March 4, 2011

WHY?

Too often urban public schools like many in New York City do not offer the high quality, academic afterschool programs that its students need to enrich their curriculum and stimulate learning. I had the chance to participate in Battle of the Books as an elementary student, and I honestly believe it helped me become the avid reader I am today.

WHAT?

An afterschool reading program that offers 4th and 5th grade students the chance to read challenging books, engage in friendly competition, and become excited about reading. Columbia students are volunteers, or coaches, for each team.

HOW?

Students, in three to four person teams, compete weekly to test their knowledge of assigned books in a trivia-style battle. The program concludes with a championship tournament with prizes awarded to the winning team. Funds are raised by Columbia students volunteers and through your support!
